“Speaking for the Trees” – how gas leaks harm trees.  Sponsored by Mothers Out Front Brookline.  At the Coolidge Corner Library.

Dr. Pamela Templer, BU Professor of Biology and a climate change researcher, will present the results of her research from an experimental forest in New Hampshire where, with her team, she has been simulating an increasingly warm environment. Ray Oladapo-Johnson, Director of Park Operations for the Emerald Necklace Conservancy, will speak about his organization's efforts to detect methane gas leaks and protect trees from the adverse effects of leaking methane gas.

Massachusetts has more than 20,000 gas leaks with over 300 in Brookline, making our town the second highest in gas leaks per mile.

Learn what you need to know and how you can make a difference in Brookline and beyond.

Gas leaks tagging event on May 13th at 10:00 in the morning; meet in front of town hall.  Did you know that Brookline has 250 natural gas leaks under our roads? While that is a daunting number of leaks, in fact half of all the leaked gas comes from just 7% of the largest leaks. Fixing these leaks will dramatically reduce emissions and save ratepayer money in the fastest, most efficient manner.

National Grid is working with allies and the Town of Brookline on a study to find and fix the biggest leaks, called super emitters.

That's a great start. But we want to identify all the super emitters.  Please join us in our gas leaks tagging event. We will give a brief overview of why gas leaks are so toxic to the environment and our public health. Then we will split into teams and tag the leaks around our town. You will be provided with maps and materials.

Let National Grid know that Brookline wants more of our biggest leaks fixed fast.

The event is co-sponsored by State Senator Cynthia Creem, Climate Action Brookline, Temple Sinai, Temple Israel, 350 Mass for a Better Future, Brookline TEEN Center, Green UP team of United Parish Church of Brookline, Elders Climate Action, Mass Health Care Providers Against Fracked Gas, Girl Scout Brownie troop 62564.
