Climate Action Brookline educates residents and businesses on ways to make sound choices surrounding energy efficiency, food, and transportation that will lead to reductions in greenhouse gas emissions. In the past few years, CAB has held over 60 events and canvassed almost 6,000 homes to inform residents of ways they could reduce their carbon footprint.
We hold a monthly meeting on the second Monday of every month (except for August). Meetings are at 5:00 pm and are typically held at Brookline Town Hall or via Zoom.
Our History
In April 2000, the Board of Selectmen voted unanimously to join the "Cities for Climate Protection" program of the International Council for Local Environmental Initiatives (ICLEI) and that May organized a public forum on climate change.
On June 15th, the first official meeting of Climate Action Brookline took place under the name of Climate Change Initiatives Action Group.
Since that time, CAB has been involved in actions both large and small:
- Sponsorship of warrant articles requiring the town to purchase alternative fuel or hybrid vehicles, to provide greater protection for trees and for purchasing renewable energy.
- Development of a compact fluorescent light bulb sales program.
- Support of the International Walk to School Day.
- Co-sponsorship of an event to raise $20,000 for solar panels for the Brookline Health Department renovation.
- Organization of Climate Action Day, a public fair with speakers Barney Frank, Frank Smizik, Ross Gelbspan and Mindy Lubber.
- Proposal and passage in May 2008 of Article 29 to establish a 15-member Selectmen's Climate Advisory Committee.
- Development of a town-wide Carbon-Cutting Campaign to show our leadership across Brookline and to other communities.
- "Climate Week" events - including panel discussions, art displays, readings, and lectures - each January since 2010.
- Receipt of significant funding that allowed us to hire a part-time Carbon-Cutting Campaign Director.
